Building Community Sustainability Through Early Childhood Development
At Avo Vision, we believe that true development happens when opportunities translate into long-term impact, not only for individuals, but for entire communities. The journey of siblings Andrew Nkuna and Joyce Molefe from Zonkizizwe, is a powerful example of how employment, skills development and support can grow into sustainable community change.
Andrew and Joyce joined Avo Vision in 2024 through a partnership with the Industrial Development Corporation’s (IDC) Social Employment Fund (SEF), during its Phase Three rollout, where they were appointed as Field Coordinators. SEF is a government-supported initiative implemented through trusted organisations to create meaningful work opportunities that address social needs while providing income, skills and dignity to participants.
At Avo Vision, Field Coordinators play a critical role on the ground. They support project implementation, coordinate community activities, ensure compliance with programme goals and act as a bridge between beneficiaries and the organisation. For Andrew and Joyce, this role became more than just a job, it became the foundation for a dream.
Turning Employment into Enterprise
Motivated by the stability and skills gained through SEF employment, the siblings made a deliberate decision to save their income with a long-term goal in mind. In 2025, that vision became a reality when they began renting Busiswa Day Care Centre, previously owned by another principal. With support and guidance from Avo Vision’s Enterprise Development (ED) department, they renovated the facility to make it safer, more child-friendly and compliant, while also receiving business mentorship, basic financial literacy training, operational guidance and compliance support to ensure the centre met safety, legal and sector standards. Designed to turn livelihoods into lasting businesses that strengthen local economies.
Avo Vision’s ED department works closely with emerging entrepreneurs, particularly in community-based sectors such as Early Childhood Development, helping beneficiaries transition from informal or dependent income streams into structured, income-generating enterprises that can grow sustainably. By supporting formalisation, improving service delivery and building capacity for job creation, the department ensures that enterprise growth translates into meaningful community impact and long-term sustainability.
In addition to infrastructure improvements, Andrew and Joyce invested in learning equipment and educational resources to support structured learning and child development at the centre.
Today, the Day Care Centre offers extra educational classes, creating a richer learning environment for young children. Importantly, the enterprise has also created employment for others in the Zonkizizwe community, four teachers and one security guard, ensuring that the impact extends beyond the founders themselves.
Andrew strongly believes in the transformative power of early learning. “Early childhood care helps instil interest in education and curiosity in young children. When children are exposed to learning early, it shapes how they see the world and their future,” he said.
Joyce added that their vision goes beyond supervision. “For us, it’s not about keeping children while parents go to work. It’s about making sure the kids are developing mentally and are given a strong foundation for life,” she explained.
